BIO
Lou Peralta is a visual artist and contemporary photographer based in Mexico City. She belongs to the fourth generation of a family dedicated to portrait photography — a legacy that continues to nourish her ongoing exploration of the genre. Her practice expands the limits of the two-dimensional photographic image, reimagining portraiture as a sculptural and spatial experience.
With a background in editorial photography, Peralta transitioned over the last decade into a full-time artistic practice. Her recent work intertwines pre-Hispanic influences with contemporary culture and often materializes in hand-built structures made of diverse materials —such as paper, fabric, agave fiber, or copper wire— integrating photographic processes with physical gestures and artisanal methods.
Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Mexico and abroad, including recent presentations in León, Guanajuato; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Houston, Texas.
She is currently developing a series that fuses contemporary portraiture with the architectural concepts of Luis Barragán. Peralta is a Fujifilm brand ambassador through the X-Photographers program and an international member of Cameracraftsmen of America. Her recent recognitions include being selected for the Photolucida Critical Mass Top 50 (2023) and her participation in the22nd Santa Fe Photography Symposium in New Mexico, USA.
Artist Statement
I am a fourth-generation artist from a family devoted to photographic portraiture—a legacy that laid the foundation for my artistic practice. Since 2017, I have undertaken a full-time exploration of portraiture, expanding its boundaries and questioning its traditional forms.
My work engages in a dialogue between ancestral memory and contemporary culture, merging pre-Hispanic influences with present-day domestic references. Moving beyond representation, I reimagine photography as a sculptural, spatial, and material experience. Through mixed-media processes, I transform the flat surface into a three-dimensional encounter, embedding objects and textures that evoke both intimate and collective histories.
In this expanded approach to portraiture, I investigate how time, space, and matter shape identity within the image. My work draws from architecture and quantum theory to explore perception and fragmentation—troubling the idea of permanence, and inviting the viewer into a shifting field where the portrait is not fixed, but alive within the space it inhabits.
