Houston CityCentre exhibition until June 26, 2021.
Houston-based Midway, a privately owned, fully integrated real estate investment and development firm, is pleased to announce that CITYCENTRE has teamed up with the Weingarten Art Group to present the third annual Art @ CITYCENTRE, a rotating art program featuring fresh and engaging exhibitions of works from three Texas-based artists and galleries including Brad Tucker, Lou Peralta, and Ansen Seale. The artwork will be on display now through June 26 in lobby spaces across the dynamic shopping, dining, and entertainment community.
Whether visiting CITYCENTRE for an afternoon of shopping at its dynamic retailers or enjoying a date night with dinner and ‘Music in the Plaza’, guests are encouraged to stop by the lobby of CITYCENTRE 3 to browse the eye-catching artwork of Lou Peralta’s“Disassemble” exhibition. As a fourth-generation portrait photographer, Peralta’s work captures an energy and internal consciousness influenced by the diverse cultural heritage across Mexico. Through her photos, Peralta seeks to build appreciation for a new Mexican identity – to overcome stereotypes and preconceptions, in which her subjects are given a deeper essence of heritage and identity by deconstructing images and reconstructing them into new sculptural portraiture.
Art aficionados who want to avoid the lineups and pre-programmed time slots at museums are encouraged to stop by CITYCENTRE lobbies to view these limited-time art galleries during regular business hours from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. CITYCENTRE 3 is also open from 7-11 a.m. on Saturdays. Each of these unique pieces of artwork is available for purchase upon request.

April, 2021. Lou Peralta represented by Obscura Gallery in Santa Fe, Nuevo Mexico, USA.
"Obscura Gallery was formed by Owner and Director Jennifer Schlesinger and represents the finest contributions to the history of photography both through contemporary and vintage works. A photography dealer, and artist herself, Jennifer brings to Obscura Gallery the experience of being the Director of Verve Gallery of Photography in Santa Fe, New Mexico for eleven years until they closed in 2017. Obscura Gallery, conceived in 2016, and named after the original Camera Obscura, was founded on Jennifer’s passion for photography which is deeply rooted in the history of the medium. The Gallery encourages the ways in which contemporary artists are using photographic progresses to create fine additions to the history of the medium which began nearly 200 years ago.".

fotorelevance launches RestART collection
Today’s RESTART piece draws from a different body of Lou Peralta’s work, never before shown at the gallery. Peralta is known for her rethinking and restructuring of classical portraiture through the physical process of disassembling her images and weaving them back together in meaningful ways—“Portrait on the Rocks” takes a different approach to this subversion of classical portraiture, featuring not a face, but a cast of a face. The cast captures a moment in time, preserving it for eternity, much like a photograph does.

Stay tuned for work from a new artist next week!

fotorelevance launches RestART collection
Our next artist in the RESTART collection is Lou Peralta (@lou_peralta_photo_based_artist) with work from Disassemble Series I. “Disassemble #11” is a striking woven portrait which seeks to deconstruct the traditional image, undo the illusion, and give portraiture a new meaning. Quarantine Blues - collective exhibition curated by Suzanne Zeller
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcb2Mj9AhPY
Foto Relevance is excited to announce our next show back in the gallery. Quarantine Blues was originally developed as an online exclusive show for buying art on a budget, and now the show has been expanded with a different set of works to fill the physical space of the gallery as we slowly adjust back to normalcy. The color blue is an omnipresent factor in our lives, filling the sky and the water with its seemingly infinite depth. We’ve brought the contemplative color indoors with selections from Brenda Biondo, Deborah Bay, Lou Peralta, Karen Navarro, Claire Rosen, Robert Langham III, Mark Chen, Torrie Groening, Lou Vest, Margeaux Walter, Paul-André Larocque, Joana Cardozo, and Julia McLaurin. May, 2020. Foto Relevance is excited to announce the release of Comalli, a brand new series by gallery artist Lou Peralta.
Comalli blends photographs of comals—a type of clay griddle used, since pre-Hispanic times, in Mexican households to make fresh tortillas—with portraits of women and men from across Mexico. In keeping with the multimedia element of Peralta's practice, the composite prints are then embellished with materials found in local markets and nature, such as feathers, gold tissue paper, and jerga fabric.
For Peralta, Comalli honors how integral comals are to daily Mexican family life. In her statement, the artist writes:
I remember that at my grandmother’s house in Mexico City, they would bring the corn to the mill to make the masa, which was then used to pat out the tortillas by hand and then toast them in the comal over the stove. [...]
Most Mexicans prepare tortillas at home every day, and the comal where they are cooked becomes a witness to the family’s history. Usually this basic implement is used for years before throwing it out, so it’s not unusual to find one that has accompanied various generations. The more the comal is used, the better the tortillas taste. [...] Some people even say that the comal has its own soul.
